CEO of Mirror Trading International Bitcoin Ponzi Scheme Arrested in Brazil – Regulation Bitcoin News

the wanted CEO of Mirror Trading International, was recently arrested by Brazilian law enforcement authorities after being caught using a false document. The verdict, which took place in the province of Goiás in the country, was handed down by the Brazilian military police.

Seized fake IDs, laptops and credit cards

Johann Steynberg, CEO of Mirror Trading International (MTI), a bitcoin Ponzi scheme, was recently arrested by Brazilian law enforcement authorities after being caught using a false document, reports from the South American country said. Credit cards, laptops and fake IDs were also seized after the verdict.

According to several Portuguese reports, Steynberg, who is on Interpol’s wanted list, has been detained in the province of Goiás by members of an elite unit of the Brazilian military police.

In a statement confirming the verdict, the Brazilian military police also provided details of the steps taken before the decision to capture Steynberg. The statement explains:

After intensive work on identification and surveillance and with the help of information provided by the federal police, it was possible to identify and contact the suspect who presented a false document at the time of the approach.

Steynberg found for using a fake document

In addition to being arrested for his role as chief architect of the bitcoin Ponzi scheme MTI, Brazilian military police said Steynberg must also pay a fine for using a fake document.

As previously reported by Bitcoin.com News, Steynberg disappeared in late December 2020 when there were reports that several MTI investors were unable to withdraw their funds. Shortly after his disappearance, a South African court ruled that MTI must be placed in temporary liquidation.

Since then, however, other MTI architects – identified as the biggest bitcoin fraud in 2020 – have fought to halt the process of liquidating the bankrupt company. Meanwhile, a court ruling is still pending on a petition seeking to declare MTI an illegal business.
